The BDA's Scottish Salaried Dentists Committee has been involved in discussions which have led to NHS Education Scotland developing a course for dentists in the assessment of incapacity and will include learning outcomes. The course will be in addition to the programme already provided by Napier University. Initially the course will be piloted in Lanarkshire, but it is likely to be rolled out to all dentists in Scotland in the future. Amendments to the regulations and changes to the Scottish Statutory Instruments will be required in due course.

Following approaches from the BDA’s Scottish Dental Practice Committee, Tayside Pharmaceuticals, NHS Tayside’s pharmaceutical manufacturing unit, have agreed to supply emergency drug kits to dental practices in Scotland who choose to use their services.

After protracted discussions between the Scottish Dental Practice Committee (SDPC) and Scottish Government over the latter's intention to introduce continuous registration. Despite opposition from SDPC and the wider profession, the Scottish Government will be introducing lifelong registration from 1 April 2010.

Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) today voted by a margin of 7-1 against a motion to annul legislation to allow the introduction of continuous (lifelong) registration of dental patients in Scotland.
